Description
Saul Steinberg’s Line
2010, Documentary, 26 minutes (in French with English subtitles)
Directors: Daniela Roman and Thierry Fontaine
Born in Romania, Saul Steinberg(1914-1999) studied architecture in Milan. In 1941, he fled Fascist Italy for the Dominican Republic and a year later arrived in the United States, where he had already published a number of drawings in The New Yorker.
For Steinberg, drawing was « away of reasoning on paper » and 60 years we watched him thinking on the pages of magazines and in gallery and museum exhibitions. Steinberg’s work lies at the heart of postwar drawing conceived as a vehicle for humor and social commentary. This documentary is a portrait and tribute by french cartoonists, intercut with Steinberg drawings and footage from a 1968 film of Steinberg drawing and creating masks.
